Judges 3:23

Posted on 17 November 2024
Listen to this article

“Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.”

Context:The book of Judges describes a period of Israel’s history after Joshua’s leadership, when the Israelites were governed by a series of judges. In this particular chapter, the Israelites had fallen into idolatry and were under the oppression of the Moabites for eighteen years. God raised up Ehud as a judge to deliver Israel from their oppressors.

Historical background:Before delving into the verse itself, it is essential to understand the historical context. The Israelites were living in cycles of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance throughout the book of Judges.

Ehud’s mission:Ehud, a left-handed man from the tribe of Benjamin, was chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from the Moabites. He devised a plan to assassinate Eglon, the Moabite king, who had become a powerful oppressor.

Strategic actions:Judges 3:23 describes a critical moment in Ehud’s plan. After presenting a tribute to King Eglon, Ehud asked for a private audience and used this opportunity to carry out his mission. The verse states that Ehud went through the porch, shut the doors of the king’s chamber, and locked them behind him.

Symbolism and significance:The act of shutting and locking the doors was significant for several reasons. Firstly, it ensured privacy and secrecy for Ehud to carry out his plan without interruption. Secondly, it prevented anyone from immediately discovering Eglon’s death, granting Ehud a head start in his escape. Lastly, it symbolized the end of Eglon’s oppressive reign and the beginning of deliverance for the Israelites.

God’s sovereignty:Although the verse does not explicitly mention God, it is crucial to recognize God’s hand in the events unfolding. God raised up Ehud as a deliverer and guided him through the entire process, empowering him to bring freedom to Israel.

Lessons for believers:The story of Ehud reminds us that God can use unexpected individuals to accomplish His purposes. Ehud’s left-handedness, typically considered a disadvantage in ancient warfare, became a unique advantage for him in this situation. It teaches us that God can work through our weaknesses and use them for His glory.

Application:As believers, we can draw lessons from this passage. We should be willing to step out in faith, trusting that God can use us despite our limitations. Additionally, we should be mindful of the importance of strategic planning and seizing the opportunities God presents to us.

In summary, Judges 3:23 recounts an essential moment in Ehud’s mission to deliver Israel from the Moabite oppression. Through his strategic actions of shutting and locking the doors, Ehud ensures privacy, initiates the downfall of King Eglon, and begins the process of deliverance for Israel. This passage serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through unexpected individuals.
