Judges 3:26

Listen to this article

“And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Judges that describes the deliverance of the Israelites from their oppressors, the Moabites. Ehud was one of the judges raised by God to rescue the Israelites from their enemies.

Historical Context:During the time of the Judges, the Israelites went through cycles of disobedience, oppression by neighboring nations, repentance, and deliverance by God through appointed judges. The events described in Judges 3:26 took place after the Israelites had been oppressed by the Moabites for eighteen years.

Ehud’s Role:Ehud was a left-handed man from the tribe of Benjamin and was chosen by God to be a deliverer for the Israelites. The Israelites brought tribute to Eglon, the king of Moab, which included a tribute to be given to Eglon personally. Ehud used this opportunity to assassinate King Eglon and initiate the deliverance of his people from Moabite oppression.

The Escape:After Ehud had successfully assassinated Eglon, he escaped from the palace. Judges 3:26 states that Ehud “escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.” This verse highlights Ehud’s quick thinking and cunning. The phrase “while they tarried” suggests that the servants of King Eglon were delayed in responding to the commotion caused by Ehud’s actions, giving him a window of opportunity to escape.

The phrase “passed beyond the quarries” indicates that Ehud moved past a location associated with quarries or stone-cutting. The specific location or significance of this detail is not further elaborated upon in the biblical text. Finally, Ehud reached a place called Seirath, which was likely a nearby region or city.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God uses unlikely individuals:Ehud’s left-handedness was considered unusual in his time, but God chose him for a significant task. This reminds us that God can use anyone, regardless of their perceived limitations or societal expectations, for His purposes.
  • God’s deliverance:The story of Ehud demonstrates God’s faithfulness in delivering His people from oppression. It shows that God is able to raise up leaders and use unconventional means to bring about freedom and deliverance.
  • Resourcefulness and faithfulness:Ehud’s escape required quick thinking and resourcefulness. He seized the opportunity presented to him and acted boldly. This teaches us the importance of being alert to opportunities and using the resources and abilities God has given us to accomplish His purposes.

In summary, Judges 3:26 recounts the escape of Ehud after assassinating King Eglon. This verse highlights Ehud’s ability to seize the moment and escape from his enemies. The broader narrative emphasizes God’s faithfulness in raising up deliverers and His willingness to use unexpected individuals and methods to rescue His people.
