"So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years."
Context:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after they entered the Promised Land. During this time, the Israelites experienced a cycle of disobedience, oppression by foreign nations, repentance, and deliverance through judges whom God raised up. Judges 3:30 is part of the account of Ehud, one of the judges whom God used to deliver the Israelites from the Moabites.
The Oppression of Moab:Prior to Ehud’s deliverance, the Moabites had oppressed the Israelites for eighteen years (Judges 3:14). The Moabite king, Eglon, was a powerful and oppressive ruler who had seized control over the Israelites.
Ehud’s Strategy:Ehud, from the tribe of Benjamin, was chosen by God to be the deliverer of Israel. He devised a plan to assassinate King Eglon and free the Israelites from Moabite oppression. Ehud crafted a double-edged sword and concealed it on his right thigh, as he was left-handed (Judges 3:15-16).
The Assassination:Ehud visited King Eglon under the pretense of delivering a message from God. When Ehud presented the message, he took the opportunity to draw his sword and plunged it into Eglon’s belly. The fat of Eglon’s belly covered the sword, and the king’s death was immediate (Judges 3:20-23).
The Subduing of Moab:After killing Eglon, Ehud rallied the Israelites and led them to victory against the Moabites. Judges 3:30 states that “Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel.” Through Ehud’s bold action and leadership, the Israelites were able to overthrow their oppressors and achieve victory.
Period of Rest:Following the defeat of Moab, the land of Israel enjoyed a period of peace and rest for eighty years (fourscore years). This period allowed the Israelites to rebuild and reestablish their worship of God without external threats.
Lessons from Judges 3:30:
- God raises up deliverers:In this account, God chose Ehud as a deliverer for the Israelites. It shows that God is faithful to raise up individuals to bring deliverance to His people in times of need.
- God’s deliverance often requires bold action:Ehud’s assassination of King Eglon was a bold and unconventional action, but it brought liberation to the Israelites. Sometimes, God calls us to step out of our comfort zones and take courageous steps for His purposes.
- God provides rest after deliverance:Once the Moabites were subdued, the Israelites experienced a period of rest. Similarly, when God delivers us from our oppressors or troubles, He provides a time of peace and restoration.
- The importance of seeking deliverance from oppression:The Israelites had suffered under Moabite oppression for many years until they cried out to God for help. This teaches us the significance of seeking deliverance from any form of oppression or bondage in our lives, turning to God for His intervention.
