Judges 5:11

Listen to this article

“And the inhabitants of the city went out of the city, and the inhabitants of the fields went out of the fields.”

Context: Judges 5 is known as the “Song of Deborah,” which is a poetic celebration of the victory of Israel over their enemies under the leadership of Deborah and Barak. This song is recorded in the Book of Judges, and it is attributed to Deborah and Barak. It highlights the events and individuals involved in the battle and praises God for His deliverance.

Historical Background: The period of the Judges: The Book of Judges describes a tumultuous period in Israel’s history after they entered the Promised Land. It was a time of cycles where the people would turn away from God, experience oppression, cry out to God, and then be rescued by a judge whom God raised up. The battle against Sisera: In this particular instance, the Israelites were oppressed by Jabin, the king of Canaan, and his commander, Sisera. Deborah, a prophetess and judge, called Barak to lead the Israelite army into battle against Sisera’s forces.

Verse Analysis: “They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water”: This phrase speaks of those who were spared from the dangers of the battlefield. Drawing water was a routine task, usually done by women at wells or watering places. It represents the peaceful and ordinary activities of daily life.

“There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel”: The delivered people, in gratitude and celebration, would recount and remember the righteous acts of the Lord. They acknowledged God’s intervention and protection in their lives and in the lives of the inhabitants of their villages.

“Then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gates”: This phrase signifies that the people, having witnessed God’s faithfulness and deliverance, would gather together and go down to the city gates. The gates of the city were significant places where legal matters were discussed, disputes were settled, and important decisions were made. The people would share their testimony and give praise to God publicly.

Key Themes: Gratitude and praise: The verse emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and recounting God’s righteous acts. The delivered people were grateful for God’s intervention and wanted to remember and celebrate His faithfulness. Testimony and communal worship: By going down to the gates, the people of Israel shared their testimonies of God’s deliverance and praised Him openly. This public proclamation served to strengthen the faith of the community and inspire others to trust in God. God’s righteous acts: The verse highlights God’s righteousness and His care for His people. His acts of deliverance demonstrated His justice and faithfulness.
