Judges 6:3

Listen to this article

“And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after they had entered the Promised Land. After the death of Joshua, the Israelites went through a cycle of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. The verse in question is set during a time of oppression when the Midianites, Amalekites, and other eastern nations invaded Israel.

Oppression of Israel:The Midianites, Amalekites, and the children of the east were nomadic tribes that often raided and oppressed the Israelites. In this particular instance, they came up against Israel after the Israelites had sown their crops. The purpose of their attacks was to plunder the land, destroy crops, and impoverish the people.

Consequences of Disobedience:The oppression of Israel by these nations was a result of their disobedience to God. Throughout the book of Judges, the Israelites repeatedly turned away from God, worshiped foreign gods, and broke the covenant they had with Him. As a consequence, God allowed their enemies to oppress them as a form of discipline and to bring them to repentance.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Consequences of Sin:The story of the Israelites in Judges teaches us that sin has consequences. When we turn away from God and disobey His commands, we open ourselves up to the oppression and troubles of the world.
  • God’s Discipline:God, in His love and justice, disciplines His people when they go astray. The oppression of Israel served as a means to bring them back to Him. Similarly, God may allow difficulties in our lives to draw us closer to Him and to help us realise our need for repentance.
  • God’s Faithfulness:Despite Israel’s disobedience, God remained faithful to His people. In the subsequent verses, we read how God raised up Gideon to deliver Israel from their oppressors. It reminds us that even in the midst of our struggles, God is with us, and He can provide a way of deliverance.

Application:

  • Obeying God:We should strive to obey God and live according to His commands. Disobedience can lead to spiritual oppression and distance from God.
  • Repentance and Restoration:When we realise we have strayed from God’s ways, we should humble ourselves, repent, and seek restoration with Him. God is always ready to forgive and restore those who turn back to Him.
  • Trusting God in Difficulties:Just as God delivered Israel from their enemies, He is our deliverer in times of trouble. We should trust in His faithfulness, seek His guidance, and rely on His strength to overcome the challenges we face.
