Listen to this article

And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the sonne of Ioash hath done this thing. Judges 6:29 (KJV)

Context and Background: Judges 6:29 is part of the account of Gideon, whom God chose to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites. The Israelites had been disobedient, and as a result they lived under the yoke of their enemies. Gideon was a young man of the tribe of Manasseh, called by God to become a mighty warrior and judge for the people.

Who Hath Done This Thing?: In this verse the Israelites are questioning who was responsible for a decisive act. The act in question was the tearing down of the altar of Baal, an idol that the people had erected. God had commanded Israel to worship Him alone, and Gideon, obeying that command, took it upon himself to destroy the altar.

Gideon, the Son of Joash: The people discovered that Gideon, the son of Joash, was the one who had torn down the altar. His bold action demonstrated faithfulness to God’s commandments and a willingness to confront prevailing idolatry. By destroying the altar, Gideon symbolically rejected false worship and signaled the beginning of a spiritual renewal among the Israelites.

Lessons and Application – Faithful Obedience: Gideon’s deed teaches the importance of obeying God even when it conflicts with cultural norms. His courageous destruction of the altar shows that true obedience may require personal risk, yet it affirms a wholehearted commitment to God.

God’s Call and Empowerment: The narrative reminds us that God calls ordinary individuals for specific purposes. Though Gideon doubted his ability, God equipped him for the task. Likewise, God can empower each of us to accomplish extraordinary work when we submit to His will.

Rejecting Idols: The episode underscores the need to remove anything that takes the place of God in our lives—whether material possessions, ambitions, or unhealthy attachments. As Gideon stood against idol worship, we are called to examine our hearts and eliminate modern idols that hinder our relationship with the Lord.

Spiritual Revival: Gideon’s act sparked a spiritual awakening among the people. Our obedience can have a ripple effect, inspiring others to turn back to God and experience His transforming power.

In summary, Judges 6:29 highlights Gideon’s obedience and commitment to God’s commands. It calls us to faithful obedience, recognize God’s call and empowerment, reject idols, and embrace the potential for spiritual revival when we live out our faith.
