Judges 7:9

Posted on 1 December 2024
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.”

Context:The book of Judges is set during a time when Israel was ruled by judges, who acted as both military leaders and spiritual guides. The Israelites had been oppressed by the Midianites, and Gideon was chosen by God to deliver them from their oppression.

Gideon’s army:In Judges 7, Gideon gathered an army of thirty-two thousand men to face the Midianites. However, God saw this number as too large, as it might lead the Israelites to take credit for the victory. So, God instructed Gideon to reduce the number of soldiers.

God’s instruction:In Judges 7:2, God told Gideon, “The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.” God wanted to ensure that the victory would be attributed to His power and not to the strength of the Israelite army.

Reduction of the army:Gideon first allowed anyone who was fearful to leave, and twenty-two thousand men departed, leaving only ten thousand (Judges 7:3). But God still considered the number too large, so He gave Gideon further instructions.

The selection process:In Judges 7:4-7, God instructed Gideon to bring the soldiers to the water and observe how they drank. Those who lapped the water with their tongues like a dog were to be set apart, while those who kneeled down to drink were to be sent home. Three hundred men were chosen through this process.

God’s purpose:Through this process, God was demonstrating His power to deliver Israel with a small and seemingly weak army. By reducing the number to a mere three hundred men, the victory would clearly be attributed to God’s intervention and not human strength.

Total reliance on God:Gideon’s army faced a vast Midianite army, but they trusted in God’s promise and followed His instructions. This event emphasizes the importance of complete reliance on God’s power and provision rather than human capabilities.

God’s deliverance:In Judges 7:9, God assured Gideon that He had delivered the Midianite army into his hand. The battle that followed demonstrated God’s faithfulness as He caused confusion among the Midianites, leading to their defeat at the hands of Gideon’s small army.

Key Lessons:

  • God often works in unexpected ways to accomplish His purposes.
  • God desires to receive the glory for the victories in our lives.
  • Our reliance should be on God’s strength and guidance, rather than relying on our own abilities.
  • Even with limited resources, when we trust and obey God, He can accomplish great things through us.

This passage teaches us to trust in God’s guidance, even when the odds seem overwhelming, and to recognize that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.
