Judges 7:19

So Gideon and the hundred men that were with him, came vnto the outside of the campe, in the beginning of the middle watch, and they had but newly set the watch, and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. Judges 7:19 (KJV)

The book of Judges records Israel’s history after Joshua’s death, a time when the nation was led by a succession of judges. During this period the people repeatedly turned away from God and consequently suffered oppression from surrounding nations. In Judges 6 we meet Gideon, whom God called to deliver Israel from the Midianites.

The Midianite oppression lasted seven years. The Midianites, together with allied peoples, invaded during the harvest season, destroying crops and bringing great hardship. The Israelites cried out to the Lord for rescue.

God chose Gideon to lead the deliverance, but first Gideon sought assurance of God’s presence. Through a series of signs God confirmed his call, preparing Gideon and the people for the battle to come.

In the night described in Judges 7:19, Gideon and his small force of three hundred men—organized into three companies—approached the Midianite camp at the beginning of the middle watch (approximately 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.). At the appointed moment they blew their trumpets and broke the pitchers they held. The sudden clamor and the shattering of the pitchers threw the Midianites into confusion and panic while they slept.

“And the three companies blew the trumpets, and the LORD set them in array before the host of the Midianites.” This brief statement underscores that the Lord positioned Gideon’s men strategically before the enemy.

The chaos caused the Midianites to turn on one another; many fled the camp, and Gideon’s men pursued, securing a decisive victory through God’s power and guidance.

Lessons from this passage include:

Reliance on God – The triumph was not due to the size of the army but to complete dependence on the Lord, showing that He can use the weak and few when they trust Him.

Obedience and Faith – Gideon and his men obeyed the specific instructions to blow trumpets and break pitchers, demonstrating that faithful obedience is essential to experiencing God’s deliverance.

God’s Power in Weakness – The unconventional tactics highlight that God’s strength is made perfect in human weakness (cf. 2 Cor 12:9), and He can employ unexpected means to achieve His purposes.

In sum, Judges 7:19 reveals God’s faithfulness to His people and His willingness to work through those who trust and obey Him, even when the odds appear overwhelming.
