Judges 7:25

Posted on 1 December 2024
Listen to this article

“But they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.”

Context:The book of Judges is part of the historical section of the Old Testament. It covers the period after the death of Joshua when Israel was in the cycle of apostasy, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. The events in Judges 7 take place during the time of the Midianite oppression of Israel.

Background:Prior to Judges 7:25, Gideon, who was called by God to lead the Israelites, gathered an army of 32,000 men to fight against the Midianites. However, God instructed Gideon to reduce the number of soldiers in order to demonstrate His power and deliver Israel in a way that would make it clear that the victory came from Him and not through human strength.

The Sign of the Fleece:Before the battle, Gideon requested two signs from God using a fleece to confirm His presence and guidance (Judges 6:36-40). These signs assured Gideon of God’s support and strengthened his faith.

The Reduction of the Army:God instructed Gideon to reduce the number of soldiers drastically. First, all who were fearful or afraid were allowed to leave, which reduced the army to 10,000 men. Then, through a unique test involving drinking water, God further reduced the number to only 300 men (Judges 7:2-7).

The Attack on the Midianites:Gideon divided his 300 men into three groups and distributed trumpets and empty pitchers with torches inside them. They surrounded the Midianite camp at night and, at Gideon’s signal, broke the pitchers, revealing the torches, and blew the trumpets. This created confusion and panic among the Midianites, who turned on each other in the darkness (Judges 7:16-22).

The Capture of the Princes:In the midst of the chaos, Gideon’s army pursued the Midianites. Judges 7:25 specifically mentions the capture and subsequent execution of two Midianite princes, Oreb and Zeeb. Oreb was killed upon a rock bearing his name, and Zeeb was slain at the winepress named after him.

The Victory:Gideon’s 300 men, with God’s help, defeated the Midianites, causing the enemy to flee in disarray. Israel was delivered from the oppression of the Midianites, and the land experienced peace for forty years (Judges 8:28).

Lessons and Application:

  • God’s power in weakness:The reduction of Gideon’s army demonstrated that victory does not come through human strength but through reliance on God’s power. God often chooses the weak and the unlikely to accomplish His purposes, showcasing His strength in their weakness (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).
  • Trusting in God’s guidance:Gideon’s faith was tested through the signs he requested from God. Similarly, in our lives, we can trust in God’s guidance and seek confirmation through prayer and His Word. God will provide the assurance we need to step out in faith and follow His leading.
  • God’s faithfulness in deliverance:The story of Gideon and the victory over the Midianites serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His people. Even when we face overwhelming odds or difficult circumstances, we can trust that God is with us, fighting on our behalf, and bringing deliverance according to His perfect plan.
  • Unity and teamwork:Gideon’s 300 men worked together as a unified force, following Gideon’s instructions and coordinating their actions. This demonstrates the importance of unity and teamwork in accomplishing God’s purposes. When believers come together in unity, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, great things can be achieved for God’s glory (Psalm 133:1, Ephesians 4:3).

In conclusion, Judges 7:25 highlights the capture and execution of two Midianite princes, which was part of Gideon’s victory over the Midianites. This passage teaches us about God’s power in weakness, the importance of trusting in God’s guidance, His faithfulness in deliverance, and the significance of unity and teamwork in fulfilling His purposes.
