Judges 8:6

Listen to this article

“And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?”

Context:The book of Judges recounts the period of Israel’s history after the death of Joshua when the Israelites were governed by judges. In Judges 8, the Israelites were engaged in a battle against the Midianites. Gideon, one of the judges of Israel, led a small army against their oppressors.

The victory of Gideon:Prior to verse 6, Gideon and his 300 men had miraculously defeated the Midianite army, thanks to God’s intervention and guidance. Now, Gideon and his men were pursuing the remaining Midianite leaders, Zebah and Zalmunna.

The request for assistance:In verse 6, Gideon and his men arrived at the city of Succoth, weary from their pursuit. They requested bread for themselves from the princes or leaders of Succoth, hoping for support and sustenance to continue their mission.

Lack of assistance:However, the princes of Succoth responded with a question, questioning whether Zebah and Zalmunna were already captured by Gideon’s hands. They were likely skeptical of Gideon’s success and hesitant to support him without definite proof.

Gideon’s response:In the following verses, Gideon assures the princes that he would indeed capture Zebah and Zalmunna, and when he returns in triumph, he would deal with those who had refused to help. Gideon and his men pressed on from Succoth and eventually captured the Midianite kings, bringing an end to their oppression.

Lessons from the passage:

  • Trusting God’s promises:Gideon’s encounter with the princes of Succoth highlights the importance of trusting in God’s promises. Despite their doubt, Gideon knew that God had called him and promised victory. In our own lives, we should trust in God’s promises and have faith that He will fulfil His Word.
  • The significance of support:Gideon’s request for assistance reminds us of the importance of supporting one another. As Christians, we are called to care for and assist our brothers and sisters in need. Just as the princes of Succoth hesitated to support Gideon, we should examine our hearts to ensure that we do not withhold help when it is within our power to provide it.
  • Facing skepticism and opposition:Gideon faced skepticism from the princes of Succoth. Similarly, as followers of Christ, we may encounter skepticism or opposition when we step out in faith to fulfil God’s calling. It is crucial to remain steadfast and trust in God’s strength and guidance even when others doubt or question us.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s promises:Reflect on God’s promises in the Bible and trust that He is faithful to fulfil them. Even in the face of doubt or uncertainty, hold fast to His Word.
  • Support one another:Look for opportunities to provide assistance and support to fellow believers and those in need. Show kindness and generosity, reflecting the love of Christ.
  • Persevere in the face of opposition:When facing skepticism or opposition, rely on God’s strength and continue to pursue what He has called you to do. Seek encouragement from other believers and stay focused on His purposes.

Remember to study the Bible in its entirety to gain a deeper understanding of God’s message and how it applies to your life.
