Judges 8:7

Posted on 1 December 2024
Listen to this article

“And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.”

Context:To understand the significance of Judges 8:7, it is important to consider the context in which this verse appears. The book of Judges recounts the period of Israel’s history when they were ruled by judges, who were military leaders appointed by God to deliver the people from oppression. In this particular chapter, Gideon, one of the judges, had just defeated the Midianites with God’s help. Now he is dealing with the princes of the city of Succoth and the elders of Penuel, who refused to support him in his pursuit of the Midianite kings.

Gideon’s response:In this verse, Gideon responds to the leaders of Succoth and Penuel who had refused to assist him in his pursuit of the Midianite kings, Zebah and Zalmunna. Gideon tells them that once he has successfully captured the kings, he will punish them by tearing their flesh with thorns and briers from the wilderness. This statement reflects Gideon’s determination to avenge the mistreatment he and his men had faced from these cities. It is worth noting that Gideon’s statement carries a tone of retribution rather than reconciliation.

Symbolic meaning:Gideon’s words of punishment using thorns and briers carry symbolic meaning. In the Bible, thorns and briers are often associated with the consequences of sin and rebellion against God. The use of thorns as a form of punishment symbolises the judgment and consequences that come with disobedience. Gideon’s statement can be seen as a demonstration of the severity of the consequences that the leaders of Succoth and Penuel would face for refusing to support God’s chosen leader and failing to recognise the deliverance that God had brought through Gideon.

Lessons for us:While Gideon’s response may seem harsh to our modern sensibilities, it is important to remember that Judges is a historical account of events that took place in a specific context. Nevertheless, we can draw some lessons from this verse. Firstly, it highlights the importance of obedience and support for God’s chosen leaders. The leaders of Succoth and Penuel missed an opportunity to be part of God’s victory because of their lack of faith and support. Secondly, it reminds us of the principle that our actions have consequences. Choosing to go against God’s plan and rejecting His appointed leaders can lead to negative consequences and hinder the work of God in our lives.

In conclusion, Judges 8:7 portrays Gideon’s determination to bring justice to those who had refused to support him in his pursuit of the Midianite kings. It serves as a reminder of the consequences that can follow disobedience and rebellion against God’s chosen leaders. As we study this verse, we should seek to understand its historical context, draw lessons from it, and apply its principles to our own lives in a way that aligns with God’s grace and mercy in the New Testament.
