Judges 8:28

Listen to this article

Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel; so that they lifted vp their heads no more: and the countrey was in quietnesse fourtie yeeres, in the dayes of Gideon. Judges 8:28 (KJV)

The book of Judges records the period of Israel’s history after they entered the Promised Land and before the establishment of the monarchy. During this time the Israelites moved through cycles of disobedience, oppression by foreign nations, repentance, and deliverance through judges raised by God. Judges 8:28 is part of the account of Gideon, one of the judges who led Israel in their struggle against the Midianites.

The verse begins, “Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel,” highlighting the victory achieved by Gideon and the people over the oppressive Midianite army. The conquest was not accomplished by Israel’s strength alone but through God’s intervention. It reminds us that when we rely on God and obey His commands, He empowers us to overcome our enemies and obstacles.

It then states that the Midianites “lifted up their heads no more.” The Midianites had been a constant source of distress, causing widespread destruction and hardship. Their defeat brought peace and relief to the land, illustrating that when we confront and subdue the sources of oppression in our lives—sin and destructive patterns—we can experience freedom, peace, and restoration.

The passage continues, “the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.” The forty years of peace signify a substantial period of rest from conflict. This season of quietness demonstrates that obedience to God’s appointed leaders and adherence to His commands can lead to extended periods of peace and prosperity. While this peace was later followed by new oppressors, the text reminds us that periods of rest are part of a larger cycle of faith and trial.

Throughout Gideon’s narrative we see God’s faithfulness. Despite Gideon’s initial doubts and fears, God used him to accomplish a great victory. The prolonged peace following the victory over Midian serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His promises and reassures us that when we trust in God and follow His leading, He will sustain us and bring about favorable outcomes, even amid recurring challenges.

Lessons for us today include the importance of relying on God’s strength and guidance to overcome challenges, confronting the sources of oppression in our lives, and trusting in God’s faithfulness. We are also encouraged to recognize the seasons of peace and rest that He provides while remaining vigilant for future trials.

Application: Seek God’s guidance and strength when facing difficult situations. Rely on His power rather than solely on your own abilities. Identify areas of oppression or sin that hinder your spiritual growth and take decisive action to confront them with God’s help. Remember God’s past faithfulness and trust His promises for the future. Appreciate and make the most of seasons of peace and rest, using those times to grow closer to Him, serve others, and prepare for future challenges.

May this study on Judges 8:28 encourage you to rely on God’s strength, confront your challenges, and experience the peace and rest He provides.
