Judges 8:33

Posted on 1 December 2024
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.”

Context:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after they had entered the Promised Land, where they lived in a cycle of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 8:33 is part of the narrative following Gideon’s victory over the Midianites and his subsequent leadership over Israel.

The death of Gideon:The verse begins by stating that as soon as Gideon was dead, the children of Israel turned away from their devotion to God. Gideon was a prominent figure who had led Israel to victory and had rejected the worship of idols during his lifetime. His death seems to have marked a significant turning point for the people.

Idolatry and spiritual adultery:The Israelites turned again and went a whoring after Baalim. This language is metaphorical, describing the Israelites’ unfaithfulness to God by turning to the worship of Baal, a Canaanite deity. The term “Baalim” refers to the various local gods associated with Baal worship. Israel’s actions are described as spiritual adultery because they were forsaking their covenant relationship with God and pursuing other gods.

Baalberith:The verse mentions that the Israelites made Baalberith their god. Baalberith was another Canaanite god associated with Baal worship. It is believed to be a title meaning “Lord of the Covenant.” By making Baalberith their god, the Israelites were breaking their covenant with the true God and aligning themselves with a false deity.

Consequences of disobedience:This verse highlights the consequences of the Israelites’ disobedience. Throughout the book of Judges, we see a repeated pattern of Israel’s unfaithfulness leading to oppression and suffering. Turning away from God and embracing false gods resulted in spiritual and moral decay among the people, leading to negative consequences for the nation as a whole.

Lessons for us today:Judges 8:33 serves as a warning against the dangers of idolatry and unfaithfulness to God. It reminds us that when we prioritise anything above our relationship with God, we are prone to spiritual decline. The verse emphasises the importance of remaining faithful to God, obeying His commands, and guarding against the allure of false gods and worldly influences.
