Judges 9:7
And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
Judges 9:7 (KJV)
Context
Judges 9 records how Abimelech, one of Gideon’s sons, seized power. The leaders of Shechem made him king (Judges 9:1-6). Jotham, another son of Gideon, learns of this and goes to the top of Mount Gerizim, which overlooked Shechem. From that high place, he could speak to the people clearly.
Mount Gerizim was not a random choice. In Deuteronomy 11:29, God commanded that blessings be pronounced from this mountain. By standing there, Jotham spoke from a place linked to blessing and covenant. His location gave his message a serious and solemn tone.
Meaning
Jotham lifted up his voice and cried out to the men of Shechem. His words “Hearken unto me” are a strong call for attention. He wanted them to listen carefully to what he would say. His request “that God may hearken unto you” shows a connection between human listening and divine response. If the people would hear godly counsel, God would be ready to hear their prayers.
Jotham did not stay silent when he saw a wrong decision being made. He spoke publicly and directly, even though his audience may have been hostile. His courage came from his trust in God, not from the approval of people.
Biblical connections
The principle of reciprocal hearing appears here: human attentiveness to God’s word leads to divine attentiveness to human need. This idea is consistent with the broader teaching of Scripture that God responds to those who humbly seek Him. Jotham’s speech, which follows in the next verses, uses a parable to warn against choosing an unworthy leader. His location on Mount Gerizim also connects his message to the covenant blessings of Israel.
Application
Attentive listening: Like the men of Shechem, we should listen carefully when someone speaks truth to us, even if the message is uncomfortable.
Seeking God’s guidance: In important decisions, we should pray, study the Bible, seek wise counsel, and listen to the Holy Spirit. This is how we align ourselves with God’s will.
Responsible leadership: Leaders must act with integrity and consider the impact of their choices on others. Jotham’s concern for the people shows that true leadership cares for the well-being of those being led.
Reflection
Jotham’s example challenges us to speak up when we see injustice or unwise choices. He used a public place and a clear voice to deliver a message that could change the outcome. His words remind us that our own words carry weight. We should use them to encourage right decisions and to point others toward God. When we listen to godly counsel and seek God’s approval, we open the door for God to hear us and guide our steps.
