Judges 9:32

Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

Judges 9:32 (KJV)

This verse comes from the account of Abimelech, a son of Gideon, who killed his brothers to seize rule over Shechem. The city’s leaders first supported him, but a man named Gaal began to challenge his authority and stirred the people against him. Here Abimelech receives a military order: move “up by night” and “lie in wait in the field.” These words mean to act quickly under darkness and set an ambush in the countryside near the city.

The command is a practical tactic of surprise. By moving at night, Abimelech and his troops could avoid being seen and catch Gaal unprepared. The plan continues in the next verse, where they are to attack at sunrise. This shows careful planning and decisive action, but the goal is to crush a rival through force and deception.

Abimelech’s ambition stands in sharp contrast to his father Gideon, who refused to become king and trusted God’s provision (Judges 8:22-23). While Gideon’s humility brought peace, Abimelech’s hunger for power led to violence and eventually to his own downfall. The broader chapter shows that God used even these evil schemes to bring judgment on Abimelech and the men of Shechem for their wickedness.

Strategic thinking is valuable in daily life. Planning ahead, anticipating problems, and acting wisely are good habits. Yet this passage warns that such planning must be guided by integrity. Leaders are called to act with fairness and honesty, not to use deceit or harm for selfish ends. The desire for personal glory can corrupt even capable people.

Although the verse does not mention God, the whole account reminds us that human schemes remain under God’s control. No plan, however clever, can succeed against His purposes. Trusting in God’s righteous ways protects us from the temptation to achieve our goals at any cost. As we read Judges 9, we are invited to examine our own motives and to submit our ambitions to the Almighty.
