Judges 9:56

Listen to this article

“Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren.”

This verse is the conclusion of the story of Abimelech, who was a son of Gideon (also known as Jerubbaal). Abimelech aspired to become a ruler and desired to establish a monarchy over Israel. In his quest for power, he killed his seventy brothers, sparing only one named Jotham.

The passage highlights the principle of divine justice. It portrays God as the righteous judge who ultimately holds individuals accountable for their actions. In this case, God brings retribution upon Abimelech for his wickedness.

The story of Abimelech is a cautionary tale that reveals the consequences of seeking power through violence and treachery. It serves as a warning against the pursuit of selfish ambition, especially when it involves harming others.

Furthermore, this account underscores the theme of God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Israel. Despite the unrighteous actions of Abimelech, God ensures that justice prevails and that the wicked are held accountable for their deeds.

As we reflect on Judges 9:56:we can draw valuable lessons from the passage. It reminds us of the importance of integrity, humility, and respect for others. It also teaches us to rely on God’s justice rather than resorting to immoral and harmful methods to achieve our goals. Ultimately, we are called to trust in God’s sovereignty and follow His righteous ways.
