Judges 9:57

Listen to this article

“And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history when they were governed by a series of judges, who were raised up by God to deliver the people from oppression and lead them. The events in Judges 9 take place after the death of Gideon, also known as Jerubbaal.

Understanding the Passage:In Judges 9, Abimelech, one of Gideon’s sons, had schemed to become king over Israel. He killed his seventy brothers, except for Jotham, who escaped. Abimelech made Shechem his base of power, but his reign was marked by violence and bloodshed.

God’s Judgment:Judges 9:57 reveals that God rendered judgment upon the evil actions of the men of Shechem. Throughout the Bible, we see that God is just and does not let injustice go unpunished. The evil deeds committed by the men of Shechem brought God’s wrath upon them.

The Curse of Jotham:Jotham, the only surviving brother of Abimelech, pronounced a curse upon the people of Shechem in a parable (Judges 9:7-21). He warned them of the consequences of their actions and prophesied that fire would come out of Abimelech and consume the men of Shechem. Jotham’s curse was a pronouncement of divine judgment, and it was ultimately fulfilled.

Lessons for us:

  • God’s Justice:The passage reminds us that God is a just God who punishes evil. He holds individuals and communities accountable for their actions.
  • Consequences of Sin:The story of Abimelech and the men of Shechem serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin. Their actions led to their own downfall and the curse pronounced upon them.
  • The Importance of Integrity:Jotham’s escape and survival highlight the importance of integrity and standing up against wrongdoing. Jotham refused to be part of his brother’s evil schemes and paid the price for his righteousness.
  • The Power of Prophetic Words:Jotham’s curse was fulfilled, demonstrating the power of prophetic words spoken in alignment with God’s will. It reminds us of the importance of speaking truth and declaring God’s righteousness.

In summary, Judges 9:57 highlights God’s judgment upon the evil men of Shechem and the fulfillment of the curse pronounced by Jotham. This passage reminds us of God’s justice, the consequences of sin, the importance of integrity, and the power of prophetic words. It encourages us to live righteously and stand against injustice, knowing that God’s justice will prevail.
