But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

Context

The angel gives the mother specific instructions: she must not drink wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean, because her son will be a Nazarite to God from the womb until his death. The Nazarite vow, described in Numbers 6:1-21, was a voluntary act of dedication involving abstinence from wine, letting the hair grow, and avoiding contact with the dead. Here, God imposes this vow on Samson before his birth, and his mother must observe its restrictions during pregnancy. The phrase “from the womb to the day of his death” emphasizes that his consecration is lifelong and begins before birth.
