Listen to this article

“And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves”

Context:The book of Judges describes a period of Israel’s history when the nation was led by judges, who were chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. Judges 13-16 focuses on the story of Samson, a man who was blessed with great physical strength by the Spirit of God.

Explanation:

Setting the scene:At this point in the narrative, Samson had been chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Philistines, who were a powerful enemy of Israel.

Samson’s confrontation:The Philistines, who were aware of Samson’s strength, came to capture him. They approached him and stated their intention to bind him and deliver him into the hands of the Philistines.

Samson’s request:In response to the Philistines’ threat, Samson asked them to make a vow or swear an oath that they themselves would not attack him. He wanted assurance from them that they would not harm him personally.

Reasoning behind Samson’s request:Samson knew that if the Philistines captured him, they would torture and abuse him. By having them swear not to harm him, he sought to protect himself from immediate physical harm.

Samson’s plan:By having the Philistines make a promise not to harm him, Samson intended to use this opportunity to escape their clutches and continue his mission of delivering Israel from their oppression.

Lessons and Applications:

Prudence in adversity:Samson’s request for a vow demonstrates his shrewdness and caution in the face of danger. It teaches us to be wise and discerning when dealing with potential threats or enemies.

God’s deliverance:Throughout the story of Samson, we see how God used his unique strength and cunning to accomplish His purposes. Samson’s escape from the Philistines showcases God’s faithfulness and provision in delivering His chosen people.

Trust in God’s protection:Although Samson took precautions, ultimately, his safety and deliverance were in God’s hands. As believers, we are encouraged to trust in God’s protection and guidance, even in the midst of challenging circumstances.

Making wise decisions:Samson’s actions highlight the importance of making wise decisions in difficult situations. While he used his strength to defend himself, he also sought to escape and continue his mission to save Israel from the Philistines.

God’s sovereignty in delivering His people:The story of Samson serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty in fulfilling His plans and delivering His people from their enemies. It demonstrates that God can use even flawed individuals like Samson to achieve His purposes.

In conclusion, Judges 15:12 shows Samson’s quick thinking and prudent request for a vow of protection from the Philistines. It emphasizes the importance of wisdom, trust in God, and making wise decisions in the face of adversity.
