Judges 15:19

Posted on 29 December 2024
Listen to this article

“But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges recounts the period in Israel’s history when they were governed by various judges, who were raised up by God to deliver the Israelites from oppression. In this particular passage, Samson, one of the judges, has just defeated a thousand Philistines using a jawbone of a donkey as a weapon.

Physical Exhaustion and Spiritual Revival:After the battle, Samson was exhausted and extremely thirsty. In response to his desperate need, God miraculously provided water from a hollow place in the jawbone. When Samson drank the water, his strength and spirit were restored. This event demonstrates God’s power and care for His chosen servant, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

The Symbolism of Enhakkore:Samson named the place where God provided water “Enhakkore,” which means “the spring of the One who called.” This name reflects Samson’s recognition that it was God who had called upon Him, empowered him, and met his needs. It also serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and provision in times of distress.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Provision:The incident emphasizes God’s ability to provide for His people in unexpected and miraculous ways. When we are weary and in need, we can trust that God knows our situation and will provide for us according to His perfect timing.
  • God’s Strength in Weakness:Samson, though physically exhausted, experienced a revival of his spirit and strength through God’s intervention. This teaches us that even in our moments of weakness, God can empower us and enable us to accomplish His purposes.
  • Gratitude and Acknowledgment:Samson acknowledged God’s intervention by naming the place Enhakkore. It reminds us to give thanks to God for His provision and to acknowledge Him as the source of our strength and blessings.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Provision:When we face challenges or difficulties, we can trust that God will provide for our needs. We should not rely solely on our own strength but lean on God’s faithfulness.
  • Seek Spiritual Revival:Just as Samson experienced a revival of his spirit, we should seek spiritual renewal in our own lives. This can be achieved through prayer, reading and studying God’s Word, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • Cultivate Gratitude:Like Samson, we should cultivate a heart of gratitude and acknowledge God’s provision and blessings in our lives. Recognizing His faithfulness will deepen our relationship with Him and increase our faith.

Remember, the primary purpose of studying the Bible is to deepen our understanding of God, His character, and His ways, and to apply His teachings to our lives. May this study on Judges 15:19 encourage you to trust in God’s provision, seek spiritual revival, and cultivate a heart of gratitude.
