Judges 16:19

Listen to this article

“And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history when they were ruled by a series of judges who were raised up by God to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. Judges 16 records the story of Samson, who was one of the most well-known judges. Samson possessed great strength, but he also struggled with personal weaknesses.

Samson and Delilah:In this verse, we see Samson’s encounter with Delilah, who was a Philistine woman that became Samson’s downfall. Delilah was bribed by the Philistine rulers to discover the secret of Samson’s strength so they could subdue him.

Symbolism of the Seven Locks:The verse mentions that Delilah caused Samson to shave off the seven locks of his head. Samson’s hair was a symbol of his Nazirite vow, which he had taken from birth. As a Nazirite, Samson was consecrated to God and was forbidden from cutting his hair (Numbers 6:5). His hair represented the source of his supernatural strength, given by God.

Samson’s Vulnerability:Samson’s physical strength came from God, and it was tied to his commitment to the Nazirite vow. By revealing the secret of his hair to Delilah, Samson was compromising his devotion to God and putting himself at great risk. This episode highlights Samson’s weakness for Philistine women and his inability to resist their temptation.

Affliction and Loss of Strength:When Delilah called for a man to shave off Samson’s hair, she inflicted suffering on him. The act of cutting his hair was not merely physical but represented a deeper spiritual breach. As a result, Samson’s supernatural strength, which had enabled him to defeat his enemies, was taken away from him. This event foreshadowed the subsequent capture, blinding, and humiliation of Samson by the Philistines.

Lessons for Us:Judges 16:19 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of guarding our commitments to God and being aware of our weaknesses. Samson’s story illustrates the consequences of giving in to temptation and compromising our relationship with God. It teaches us that even those who are blessed with great strength can fall if they do not remain steadfast in their devotion to God.

God’s Grace and Redemption:While Samson suffered the consequences of his actions, his story also reveals God’s grace and ability to use flawed individuals for His purposes. In the later part of Judges 16, we see how Samson repents and calls upon God for strength one final time, leading to his ultimate victory over the Philistines in his death. This demonstrates that God can bring about redemption even in the midst of our failures.

In conclusion, Judges 16:19 is a pivotal verse in the story of Samson and Delilah, highlighting the consequences of Samson’s compromise and his loss of strength. It serves as a warning for us to guard our commitments to God and to be aware of our vulnerabilities. The story also reveals God’s grace and His ability to work through imperfect individuals.
