Judges 18:6
And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the Lord is your way wherein ye go.
Judges 18:6 (KJV)
Context
The book of Judges describes a time when God raised up judges to deliver Israel from oppression. This verse belongs to the story of the tribe of Dan, who felt crowded in their allotted land and sent five men to find a new place to settle (Judges 18:1-2). During their search, they came to the house of Micah in Mount Ephraim and recognized a young Levite serving as a priest (Judges 18:3-4). They asked him to inquire of God whether their journey would prosper (Judges 18:5).
Meaning
The priest answered, “Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.” The word “peace” (shalom) means wholeness, safety, and well-being. The phrase “before the LORD” means the journey was under God’s eye and care. The priest assured the men that God saw their path and approved it. This gave them confidence to continue.
Yet the priest was not a true priest of the tabernacle. He served in Micah’s unauthorized shrine, using an ephod and household idols to seek guidance (Judges 17:5, 18:5). His words sounded right, but they came from a corrupted source. The peace he offered was not the true peace that comes from faithful worship of God.
Biblical connections
The wider story shows that the Danites did conquer Laish and settle there (Judges 18:7-10, 27-29). But this success happened during a time when “every man did that which was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6, 21:25). The priest’s blessing seemed to bring success, yet it was disconnected from the true worship of Yahweh. This warns us that a favorable word or a sense of peace is not always equal to God’s genuine approval.
Application
We should seek God’s guidance through prayer, reading His Word, and listening to wise, faithful believers. But we must also test the counsel we receive. Not everyone who speaks in God’s name truly represents Him. We need to compare every message with the Bible and with the character of God revealed there.
When we face important decisions, we can trust that God sees our way and cares for us. Yet we must be careful not to assume that any peaceful feeling or encouraging word is automatically from God. True peace comes from walking in obedience to Him through His appointed means.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God is sovereign over our paths. He knows where we are going and what we will face. We can rest in His care, even when the way is uncertain. At the same time, we are called to discern the source of spiritual counsel. A message may sound biblical but come from a compromised place. We must hold every word up to the light of Scripture.
Let us ask God for wisdom to recognize His true voice and to follow only the guidance that leads us closer to Him. May we seek His will with humble hearts, trusting that He will direct our steps when we honor Him in all we do.
