Judges 20:15

Posted on 31 December 2024
Listen to this article

"And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men."

Historical Context:The book of Judges describes a period of Israel’s history after they settled in the Promised Land but before the establishment of a monarchy. During this time, the Israelites faced numerous cycles of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 20 is part of a narrative that recounts the events surrounding a civil war between the tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin.

Tribal Conflict:Judges 20 records the account of a grievous crime committed in the town of Gibeah, which was located in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. The crime involved the rape and subsequent death of a Levite’s concubine by some wicked men from the tribe of Benjamin. As a result, the other tribes of Israel gathered to demand justice and deliverance from this evil act.

Preparation for Battle:Verse 15 provides a glimpse into the military preparations made by the children of Benjamin. The verse states that 26,000 men who were skilled in warfare and armed with swords were gathered from the cities of Benjamin. These men were ready to defend the tribe against the other tribes of Israel.

Significance of Numbers:The number 26,000 represents a significant force, emphasizing the seriousness of the conflict. It demonstrates that the tribe of Benjamin was not to be taken lightly, as they had a sizable army ready for battle. However, it is important to note that the number mentioned here refers only to those counted from the cities of Benjamin and does not include the additional 700 chosen men from Gibeah.

God’s Sovereignty:While this verse focuses on the preparations made by the tribe of Benjamin, it is crucial to recognize the overall context of the passage. The civil war that followed was not a result of God’s direct command but was a consequence of the sinful actions of the men of Gibeah. However, God, in His sovereignty, allowed this conflict to take place and used it to bring about justice and purify the nation of Israel.

Lessons for Today:

  • The verse highlights the seriousness of sin and the consequences it can have on both individuals and communities. The actions of a few individuals in Gibeah led to a widespread conflict that affected an entire tribe and the nation of Israel. This reminds us of the importance of personal responsibility and the need to address sin promptly and justly.
  • It is a reminder that God’s justice will prevail, even in the midst of chaos. In this account, God used the conflict to execute judgment and bring about justice for the heinous crime committed.
  • The passage also serves as a reminder that God’s people must be prepared to stand against evil. The tribes of Israel assembled to confront the wickedness and seek justice. It encourages believers today to be vigilant and stand up against injustice and evil in society.

Remember, to gain a deeper understanding of any Bible passage, it is helpful to read the surrounding verses and consider the overall context and themes of the book in which it is found.
