Judges 20:35

Posted on 5 January 2025
Listen to this article

“And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and a hundred men: all these drew the sword.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges describes a period of time in the history of Israel after they settled in the Promised Land, but before they had kings. It was a time characterised by cycles of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. The events in Judges 20 take place during one of these cycles.

The Battle:In this verse, the tribe of Benjamin is engaged in a fierce battle against the other tribes of Israel. The conflict arose due to a terrible crime committed by some wicked men from the tribe of Benjamin. The people of Israel demanded justice, but the tribe of Benjamin refused to hand over the criminals. As a result, the other tribes assembled for war against Benjamin.

God’s Intervention:In the battle, the Lord intervened and fought on behalf of the other tribes of Israel. It is stated that the Lord “smote Benjamin before Israel.” This indicates that God actively participated in the battle, bringing judgment upon the tribe of Benjamin for their refusal to hand over the criminals.

The Outcome:The verse further explains that 25,100 men from the tribe of Benjamin were killed in the battle. The phrase “all these drew the sword” emphasises the severity of the conflict, indicating that all the men who were killed were actively involved in the fighting.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Divine Justice:This passage highlights God’s role as the righteous judge who punishes sin and wickedness. God does not tolerate evil, and He ensures that justice is served. It serves as a reminder that God is actively involved in human affairs and holds people accountable for their actions.
  • Consequences of Sin:The tragic outcome for the tribe of Benjamin reveals the consequences of their initial refusal to hand over the criminals. Sin and disobedience can lead to devastating consequences and bring about suffering and loss.
  • Importance of Obedience:The events in Judges 20 serve as a warning about the dangers of rebellion and disobedience to God’s commands. Benjamin’s refusal to obey the demands of the other tribes ultimately led to their downfall. Obedience to God’s Word is crucial for the well-being and unity of God’s people.
  • God’s Faithfulness:Despite the severity of the battle and the judgment upon Benjamin, it is important to remember that God remained faithful to the other tribes of Israel. He fought on their behalf and brought about victory. This displays God’s commitment to His people and His desire to protect and deliver them.

In summary, Judges 20:35 portrays a significant battle between the tribe of Benjamin and the other tribes of Israel. God intervened and brought judgment upon Benjamin, resulting in a high number of casualties. This passage emphasises the importance of obedience, the consequences of sin, and God’s role as the righteous judge. It also reminds us of God’s faithfulness in protecting His people.
