Judges 20:46

Posted on 5 January 2025
Listen to this article

“And all that fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valor.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative that describes a civil war-like conflict between the tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin. The conflict arose due to a grave sin committed by some men of Benjamin, which involved the rape and murder of a Levite’s concubine. The Israelites demanded justice, but the tribe of Benjamin chose to protect the guilty parties, leading to a war between the tribes.

To understand the significance of Judges 20:46, it is essential to consider the context. The battle between the Israelites and the tribe of Benjamin had taken place, and this verse highlights the outcome of the battle. It reveals that twenty-five thousand men from the tribe of Benjamin were killed, all of whom were valiant warriors skilled in the use of the sword.

Here are a few key points we can draw from this verse:

  • The consequences of sin:The tragic events that occurred in this story serve as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the importance of seeking justice. The sin of a few individuals led to a larger conflict that resulted in a significant loss of life.
  • The valor of the men of Benjamin:Despite the fact that they were fighting for an unjust cause, the verse acknowledges the valor and bravery of the men from the tribe of Benjamin. This demonstrates that courage and skill in battle do not necessarily guarantee righteousness or a favourable outcome.
  • God’s judgment:Throughout the book of Judges, we see God’s involvement in the affairs of Israel. While this particular verse does not mention God directly, it is part of a larger narrative in which God is orchestrating events to bring about justice and discipline His people.
  • Lessons for today:Although this passage recounts a specific historical event, we can draw lessons from it. It reminds us of the importance of seeking justice and accountability for wrongdoing. Additionally, it serves as a cautionary tale, showing the destructive consequences that can result from a failure to address sin and injustice.
