Judges 21:13

Posted on 5 January 2025
Listen to this article

“And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.”

Context:The book of Judges is a historical account of Israel’s transition from the leadership of Joshua to the establishment of a monarchy. It covers a period of about 300 years when the Israelites were ruled by various judges who delivered them from oppression. Judges 21 is the final chapter of the book and describes the aftermath of a tragic event involving the tribe of Benjamin.

The civil war and its aftermath:In Judges 19-21, a Levite’s concubine was abused and killed, leading to a civil war between the other tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin. The war resulted in the near extinction of the tribe of Benjamin, with only a few hundred men remaining. The remaining tribes, realizing the severity of the situation, sought a solution to ensure the preservation of the tribe of Benjamin.

Seeking peaceable resolution:In verse 13, the whole congregation of Israel, comprised of the tribes that were not of Benjamin, sent messengers to the tribe of Benjamin who were in the rock Rimmon. The purpose of this delegation was to call for a peaceable resolution. The tribes recognized the need to rebuild the tribe of Benjamin and restore unity among the twelve tribes of Israel.

The significance of Rimmon:The rock Rimmon was a geographical location associated with the tribe of Benjamin. It served as a place of refuge for the remaining members of the tribe after the civil war. The fact that the delegation went to Rimmon indicates their willingness to extend peace and reconciliation to the tribe of Benjamin.

The importance of seeking peace:The congregation’s decision to send messengers highlights the importance of seeking peace and reconciliation, even in the face of deep divisions and conflicts. Rather than resorting to further violence or permanently severing ties with the tribe of Benjamin, the other tribes sought a peaceful resolution to restore unity and wholeness among the people of Israel.

Lessons for today:This passage reminds us of the value of seeking peace and reconciliation in times of conflict. It encourages us to work towards healing and unity, even in situations where reconciliation may seem challenging or unlikely. It also emphasizes the importance of preserving the unity of God’s people and working together to find peaceful resolutions to disputes and divisions.

Overall, Judges 21:13 demonstrates the willingness of the Israelites to pursue peace and reconciliation with the tribe of Benjamin. It serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking peace and working towards unity among God’s people, even in the aftermath of significant conflicts.
