Judges 21:21

Posted on 5 January 2025
Listen to this article

“And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.”

Context:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after Joshua’s death, when the Israelites lacked a strong central leader. During this time, they experienced cycles of sin, oppression by foreign nations, and deliverance through judges whom God raised up. The events in Judges 21 take place after a tragic civil war between the tribe of Benjamin and the other tribes of Israel.

Cultural Background:The context of this verse is important to understand the cultural practices of that time. The Israelites were instructed to gather in Shiloh for an annual feast to the Lord (Judges 21:19). It was during this feast that the plan mentioned in verse 21 was devised.

Unusual Approach:The verse reveals an unconventional approach taken by the other tribes of Israel to provide wives for the surviving men of the tribe of Benjamin. Instead of negotiating marriages or seeking God’s guidance, they decided to ambush the daughters of Shiloh while they were dancing and forcibly take them as wives for the Benjamites.

Desperation and Repopulation:The reason behind this action was the desire to ensure the survival and repopulation of the tribe of Benjamin, which had been significantly diminished due to the civil war (Judges 21:3-4). The other tribes were concerned about the prospect of one of the twelve tribes of Israel disappearing.

Ethical Concerns:While the people were motivated by their concern for the tribe of Benjamin, their actions were clearly driven by desperation and did not align with God’s intended design for marriage. This incident reflects the moral decay and lack of strong leadership during this period in Israel’s history.

Lack of Spiritual Guidance:One of the notable aspects of this story is the absence of seeking God’s guidance. The people did what they thought was necessary to solve the problem without consulting God or the appointed judges for direction. This highlights a recurring theme in the book of Judges, where the Israelites often strayed from their covenant relationship with God.

Redemption and Consequences:While the immediate concern of providing wives for the Benjamites was addressed through this plan, the actions taken had consequences. The people had to find a way to justify their actions and also prevent future bloodshed between the tribes (Judges 21:22-23).

Trusting in God’s Guidance:The story of Judges 21:21 serves as a reminder that it is crucial to seek God’s guidance and follow His principles in all aspects of life, including marriage and solving problems. Making decisions based on desperation or cultural norms can lead to undesirable outcomes.

Consequences of Moral Decay:The incident highlights the consequences that can arise from a society that lacks moral compass or strong leadership. The people’s actions were driven by their own desires rather than seeking God’s will, leading to a breakdown of ethical standards.

God’s Faithfulness:Despite the moral failures of the Israelites, God remained faithful to His covenant with them. The story of Judges demonstrates God’s continuous efforts to redeem His people and bring them back to Himself.

Overall, the story of Judges 21:21 serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of straying from God’s guidance and making decisions driven by desperation or personal desires. It emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s wisdom and living in accordance with His principles
