Ruth 3:11

Listen to this article

“And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.”

Context:The book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative set during the time of the judges in Israel. It tells the story of a Moabite woman named Ruth who, after her husband’s death, chooses to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, and accompany her to Bethlehem. Ruth’s faithfulness and loyalty to Naomi eventually lead to unexpected blessings and a place in the lineage of King David and ultimately Jesus Christ.

Importance of Character:In Ruth 3:11, Boaz, a prominent figure in the story and a potential kinsman-redeemer for Ruth, praises her character. He acknowledges that the entire city recognises her as a virtuous woman. This verse highlights the importance of character and integrity in the eyes of others. Ruth’s virtuous conduct stood out, and it ultimately played a significant role in her future blessings. As Christians, our character should reflect godly virtues, as they have the potential to impact those around us.

Fear Not:Boaz reassures Ruth with the words, “fear not.” Ruth had taken a bold step in approaching Boaz on the threshing floor, symbolising her desire for him to fulfil the role of a kinsman-redeemer and provide protection for her and Naomi. Boaz, in response, offers comfort and encouragement, reminding her not to be afraid. This reassurance reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His call to trust Him in every situation. We can find solace in knowing that God is with us, guiding and protecting us through our journeys.

God’s Provision:Boaz promises Ruth, “I will do to thee all that thou requirest.” This statement reveals Boaz’s willingness to fulfil Ruth’s request to be her kinsman-redeemer. It emphasises God’s providence in the lives of His people. God often uses people as instruments to bring about His plans and provide for His children. In Ruth’s case, Boaz became the means through which God’s provision was manifested. Similarly, as believers, we can trust that God will meet our needs, sometimes working through people He places in our lives.

Witness to the Community:Boaz states, “all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.” Ruth’s virtuous character had not gone unnoticed. The people of Bethlehem recognised her integrity and purity of heart. This demonstrates the impact of a godly life on those around us. As Christians, our conduct should be a testimony to the world. When we live in alignment with God’s principles, our actions can influence others for good and point them to Christ.

Overall, Ruth 3:11 highlights the importance of character, the need to trust God and not be fearful, God’s provision, and the impact of a godly life on the community. It encourages us to seek God’s guidance, live with integrity, and trust in His faithfulness in every aspect of our lives.
