1 Samuel 1:19

Posted on 2 February 2025
Listen to this article

“But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel begins with the story of Hannah, who was barren and deeply distressed. She fervently prayed to God for a son, promising to dedicate him to the Lord’s service. In due course, God answered her prayer, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Samuel. This verse describes Samuel’s early service in the house of the Lord.

Samuel’s Ministry:Although just a child, Samuel served in the presence of the Lord. It is remarkable to note that God called and used Samuel at such a young age. This demonstrates that God can work through anyone, regardless of their age or background, when they are willing to serve Him.

Ministering:The term “ministered” indicates that Samuel performed various duties associated with the worship of God. As a child, his tasks were likely limited, but he carried out his responsibilities faithfully. This verse emphasizes the dedication and commitment Samuel displayed in serving God.

The Linen Ephod:The linen ephod mentioned in this verse was a garment associated with the priesthood and worship. The ephod was a sleeveless tunic-like garment made of fine linen, often worn over a robe. The high priest typically wore a more elaborate ephod, adorned with precious stones and representing his authority. Although Samuel was not yet a priest, the mention of the linen ephod underscores his involvement in the religious rituals and his proximity to the worship of God.

Lessons for us:

  • Faithfulness and Commitment:Samuel’s early service exemplifies the importance of faithfulness and commitment in our own lives. Regardless of our age or position, we can serve God faithfully and wholeheartedly.
  • God’s Call:Samuel’s calling at a young age reminds us that God can choose and use anyone for His purposes. We should be open to God’s leading and not underestimate our potential impact in His kingdom.
  • Dedication and Surrender:Hannah’s dedication of Samuel to the Lord serves as a powerful example of surrendering our children, gifts, and aspirations to God’s service. We should be willing to offer our lives and talents to the Lord’s work.

Overall, 1 Samuel 1:19 reveals Samuel’s early ministry and highlights his faithfulness, dedication, and service to God from a young age. It encourages us to remain committed to God, recognize His call on our lives, and offer ourselves wholly to His service.
