1 Samuel 2:3

Listen to this article

“Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.”

This verse is part of a prayer known as Hannah’s Song, which Hannah, the mother of Samuel, prayed after dedicating her son to the service of the Lord. It is a beautiful and profound expression of praise and thanksgiving to God.

“Talk no more so exceeding proudly”: Hannah’s Song begins with a call to humility. This statement implies that people should not boast or speak arrogantly. It reminds us to guard our words and avoid excessive pride or self-exaltation. It is a reminder that true humility recognises that everything we have and are is ultimately from God.

“Let not arrogancy come out of your mouth”: This phrase expands on the previous statement, emphasising the importance of guarding our speech. Arrogance and haughty speech are displeasing to God. We should instead strive to speak with humility, kindness, and respect, recognising that our words have the power to influence and impact others.

“For the Lord is a God of knowledge”: This part of the verse highlights an essential attribute of God—His omniscience. God is all-knowing and fully aware of every detail of our lives. He has perfect knowledge and understanding of everything, including our thoughts, intentions, and actions. This attribute of God should inspire reverence and awe.

“And by him actions are weighed”: This final phrase emphasises that God not only knows everything but also judges our actions. He weighs and evaluates our deeds according to His righteous standards. This reminds us that we are accountable to God for our behaviour. It encourages us to live in a manner that pleases Him and aligns with His will.

Overall, 1 Samuel 2:3 teaches us the importance of humility in our words and actions. It reminds us that God is all-knowing and that He evaluates our actions. Therefore, we should strive to live in a way that is pleasing to Him, seeking His wisdom and guidance in all we do.
