1 Samuel 2:4
The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.
1 Samuel 2:4 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to Hannah’s prayer of thanksgiving after the birth of her son Samuel. She had been barren and despised, but God answered her. Her song praises God for His faithfulness, holiness, and power. It also marks a turning point in Israel’s history, as God prepares to raise up a king.
Meaning
Hannah uses symbolic language. The “bows of the mighty men” stand for the weapons of strong warriors. When these bows are broken, those who trust in their own power are left helpless. In contrast, those who “stumbled” are the weak and tottering. To be “girded with strength” means God wraps them with power to stand firm. This is a complete reversal: the strong fall, and the weak are lifted. The verse speaks of spiritual reality, not just warfare. Human strength is fragile, but God gives strength to the weak who trust Him.
Biblical connections
This reversal runs through Scripture. God chooses the weak to shame the strong, as Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29. James 4:6 adds that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Hannah’s own life shows this pattern: she was weak and sorrowful, yet God gave her strength and joy. The next verse continues the theme, where the hungry are filled and the barren bear children. This also points to the gospel, where Christ, in His weakness on the cross, conquers sin and death.
Application
This verse calls us to examine where we place our trust. Human abilities and weapons are fragile; they can fail at any moment. But God’s strength is dependable. When we feel weak or unable to stand, He can gird us with His power. We do not need to be mighty in our own eyes. Instead, we come to Him with humility, knowing He delights to help the lowly. This is an encouragement to rely on God’s power, and a warning against pride and self-reliance.
Reflection
Hannah’s prayer encourages a grateful heart. She did not boast in her own achievement but gave glory to God. Her words remind us that our victories come from Him alone. In our challenges and failures, we can rely on His strength. He is sovereign over all human affairs, and He often works in ways that surprise us. Let us trust Him to break the bows of pride and to clothe us with His strength.
