Listen to this article

"He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and he hath set the world upon them."

Context:This verse is part of a prayer or song of Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Hannah had been barren and fervently prayed to God for a child. The Lord answered her prayer, and she dedicated her son Samuel to the service of God. This prayer is a song of praise and thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness and power.

God’s care for the poor and downtrodden:The verse begins with the declaration that God raises up the poor out of the dust and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill. This statement emphasizes God’s concern for the lowly and marginalized in society. It highlights His ability and willingness to lift up those who are oppressed, disadvantaged, or in need. It reveals a fundamental aspect of God’s character as the defender and helper of the weak and needy.

Exalting the humble:The verse continues by stating that God sets the poor and needy among princes and makes them inherit the throne of glory. This indicates that God not only helps the poor and downtrodden but also exalts them to positions of honor and authority. It demonstrates God’s ability to reverse human circumstances, taking the humble and raising them to positions of prominence and influence.

The sovereignty and foundation of God:The latter part of the verse declares that the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s and He has set the world upon them. This statement emphasizes God’s sovereignty and control over all creation. The image of the pillars of the earth symbolizes stability and foundation, highlighting God’s power and authority over the world. It serves as a reminder that all things belong to God and are under His governance.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s provision:The verse encourages us to trust in God’s ability to lift us up from our lowest points and to provide for our needs. It reminds us that God can transform our circumstances and raise us to places of honor.
  • God’s concern for the marginalized:We should be mindful of God’s heart for the poor, oppressed, and needy. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate His character by extending compassion, care, and support to those who are marginalized in our society.
  • Humility and exaltation:The verse highlights the principle that God values humility and exalts the humble. We should cultivate a spirit of humility and not seek to exalt ourselves but trust that God will exalt us in His perfect timing.
  • Acknowledge God’s sovereignty:The verse reminds us of God’s ultimate authority and control over the world. We should acknowledge His sovereignty in our lives, submit to His will, and trust in His divine plan.

By studying and reflecting on this verse, we can gain a deeper understanding of God’s character, His care for the poor and oppressed, and His desire to exalt the humble.
