1 Samuel 3:4

Posted on 6 February 2025
Listen to this article

“That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.”

Context:1 Samuel 3 is a significant chapter in the life of Samuel, who would later become a prominent prophet and the last judge of Israel. At this point in the narrative, Samuel was a young boy serving in the temple under the high priest Eli.

Divine Calling:In verse 4, we witness a crucial moment when God calls Samuel. The phrase “the Lord called Samuel” indicates that God initiated communication with Samuel. It is important to note that this was the first time Samuel experienced a direct encounter with the voice of God. Samuel’s response, “Here am I,” demonstrates his readiness and willingness to listen and serve God.

Active Listening:Samuel’s prompt response reflects his attentiveness and receptiveness to God’s call. It exemplifies the posture of active listening, which is a vital aspect of our relationship with God. We, too, should strive to be attentive to God’s voice, whether through prayer, studying His Word, or seeking His guidance in our daily lives.

God’s Persistent Call:The subsequent verses reveal that Samuel misunderstood who was calling him, thinking it was Eli. After Samuel repeatedly goes to Eli in response to the call, Eli realizes that it is God calling the boy and instructs him to respond to God with an open heart. This highlights God’s persistence and His desire for a personal relationship with Samuel.

Willingness to Serve:Samuel’s immediate and submissive response to God’s call indicates his willingness to serve God. This quality is commendable, especially considering Samuel’s young age. It serves as an example for believers of all ages to be ready and available for God’s work in our lives. It also highlights the importance of humility and obedience when responding to God’s call.

Application to our lives:The passage in 1 Samuel 3:4 teaches us several valuable lessons. It encourages us to cultivate an attitude of active listening, to be receptive to God’s voice, and to respond willingly when He calls us. Additionally, it reminds us of the persistence and patience of God in seeking a relationship with us. We are also reminded that God can call people from a young age and use them for His purposes, regardless of their perceived limitations.

In summary, 1 Samuel 3:4 showcases Samuel’s response to God’s call, his active listening, and his willingness to serve. It encourages us to be attentive to God’s voice, respond obediently, and be open to God’s calling in our own lives.
