1 Samuel 3:16

Posted on 6 February 2025
Listen to this article

Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel my sonne. And he answered, Here am I. 1 Samuel 3:16 (KJV)

The verse records a brief but pivotal moment in the life of Samuel, a central figure in Israel’s history who would serve as prophet, priest, and judge. At this stage Samuel is a young boy ministering in the tabernacle under the tutelage of Eli, the high priest. Eli’s address, “Samuel, my son,” reveals a personal, father‑like relationship and his affectionate concern for the boy’s spiritual formation.

When Eli calls, Samuel’s immediate reply, “Here am I,” displays a readiness to listen and obey. This simple response reflects humility and a willingness to serve both his mentor and, ultimately, God. The surrounding narrative (1 Samuel 3:1‑15) shows that Samuel had just begun to discern the Lord’s voice, initially mistaking it for Eli’s call. After Eli recognized that the voice was divine, he instructed Samuel to answer, “Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.” Samuel’s prompt availability to respond to God’s call becomes the foundation for his future prophetic ministry.

From this verse we can draw several practical lessons. First, attentiveness to God’s voice is essential; believers are encouraged to cultivate a listening heart through prayer, Scripture study, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. Second, a willing obedience—embodied in Samuel’s “Here am I”—should characterize our response to God’s direction. Third, the passage underscores the importance of submitting to godly authority. Samuel’s respectful answer to Eli models the honor due to parents, mentors, pastors, and other spiritual leaders. Finally, the verse points to a life of service. Samuel’s readiness enabled him to serve the Lord faithfully, and today Christians are called to offer their gifts, talents, and resources for God’s glory and the advancement of His kingdom.

By meditating on 1 Samuel 3:16, we are reminded to keep our hearts open, to obey promptly, to respect spiritual authority, and to serve God with a willing and available spirit, just as Samuel did.
