“Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the Book of 1 Samuel that introduces Saul, who later becomes the first king of Israel. Let’s explore the context and the significance of this verse within the broader story.

Background and Context:1 Samuel begins with the period when Israel transitioned from being ruled by judges to having a monarchy. The Israelites demanded a king, and God instructed the prophet Samuel to anoint Saul as their king. In chapter 9, Samuel was informed by God that the man whom he was to anoint as king would come to him from the land of Benjamin.

Saul’s Journey and Encounter:In this verse, Saul and his servant were on a mission to find his father’s lost donkeys. They had been searching for a while when Saul suggested to his servant that they should return, lest his father become concerned about their absence. However, the servant mentioned the presence of a man of God in the nearby city who could offer guidance.

Saul’s Response:When Saul’s servant proposed going to the city to consult the man of God, Saul agreed, saying, “Well said; come, let us go.” Saul recognized the potential for finding assistance and direction from the man of God. So, they both set out for the city where the prophet Samuel was residing.

Significance and Lessons:

  • Humility and Seeking Guidance:This verse illustrates Saul’s humility and willingness to seek guidance when faced with a challenge. Rather than relying solely on his own wisdom, Saul recognized the need for divine intervention and was open to seeking help from the man of God.
  • God’s Providence:Saul’s journey to the city where Samuel resided was not a mere coincidence but part of God’s plan. God had orchestrated events to lead Saul to Samuel, who would anoint him as king. This highlights God’s providence and how He works through various circumstances to accomplish His purposes.
  • Importance of God’s Prophets:The mention of the “man of God” indicates the significance of prophets in Israel. Samuel was a respected prophet, serving as the intermediary between God and the people. Saul’s decision to consult Samuel demonstrates the value of seeking spiritual guidance from those appointed by God.
  • Willingness to Act:Saul’s response of “come, let us go” shows his readiness to take action and pursue the opportunity for guidance. It reflects a proactive attitude rather than complacency or inaction.

Overall, this verse in 1 Samuel 9:10 reveals Saul’s humility, his recognition of the need for guidance, and his willingness to act upon the suggestion of his servant. It also emphasizes the importance of seeking wisdom from God’s appointed messengers and recognizing God’s providential hand in our lives.
