“And thou shalt go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine.”
This verse is part of the narrative in the book of 1 Samuel, specifically in chapter 10. To understand its significance, let’s examine the context surrounding it.
The book of 1 Samuel focuses on the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. In chapter 10, the prophet Samuel is directed by God to anoint Saul as the first king of Israel.
Prior to this, Samuel had received instructions from God to inform Saul about his future as king. In verse 1 of chapter 10, Samuel anoints Saul with oil as a symbol of God’s chosen leadership upon him.
Then, in verse 2, Samuel tells Saul about the events that would transpire after leaving him. Verse 3, our focus verse, continues the instructions given to Saul.
Context:In this verse, Samuel tells Saul that as he continues on his journey, he will come to the plain of Tabor. There, he will encounter three men on their way to Bethel.
Each of these men will be carrying specific items: one will carry three kids (young goats), another three loaves of bread, and the third a bottle of wine.
This encounter with the three men carrying these provisions was meant to be a confirmation to Saul that God was with him and that his anointing as king was genuine.
These items symbolize abundance and provision, indicating that God would provide for Saul’s needs as he embarked on his new role as king.
The plain of Tabor was a significant location in Israel, known for its beauty and strategic importance.
The encounter with the three men carrying these specific items was meant to be a tangible sign for Saul, validating the divine calling upon his life.
Overall, 1 Samuel 10:3 underscores the divine guidance and provision for Saul as he assumes the role of Israel’s first king.
It reminds us that God equips and sustains those whom He calls to fulfill His purposes.
The verse also highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and His presence in the lives of His chosen servants.
