1 Samuel 11:1

Posted on 31 August 2025
Listen to this article

“Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.”

Context:In the book of 1 Samuel, this verse marks an important turning point in Israel’s history. At this time, Israel was transitioning from a period of judges to a monarchy. Nahash, the Ammonite king, laid siege to the city of Jabesh-gilead, demanding the surrender of its inhabitants.

Nahash’s threat:Nahash’s actions were aggressive and posed a serious threat to the people of Jabesh-gilead. He aimed to bring them under his control by force. Nahash was known for his cruelty, and the people of Jabesh-gilead were understandably alarmed by his encampment.

The people’s response:Faced with the imminent danger, the men of Jabesh-gilead requested to make a covenant with Nahash. They proposed that if Nahash spared their lives, they would serve him. Essentially, they were willing to become his vassals to avoid destruction.

The significance:This verse demonstrates the desperate situation of the people of Jabesh-gilead. They were willing to submit to foreign rule to preserve their lives and the lives of their families. It also highlights the oppressive nature of Nahash’s reign and the fear he instilled in those he sought to conquer.

Lessons and applications:

  • Trust in God’s deliverance:The people of Jabesh-gilead faced a seemingly insurmountable challenge. However, their first response was to seek a human solution rather than relying on God. It serves as a reminder that, in difficult times, we should turn to God for help and trust in His deliverance.
  • The dangers of compromise:The people’s proposal to make a covenant with Nahash demonstrated their willingness to compromise their freedom and independence. It’s a cautionary tale about the consequences of compromising our values and principles to avoid temporary difficulties.
  • The need for godly leadership:This episode foreshadows the need for a king in Israel to provide strong and righteous leadership. It sets the stage for the anointing of Saul as the first king of Israel, as the subsequent verses reveal.
  • God’s faithfulness:Although the people of Jabesh-gilead sought a human solution, God had a different plan. In the following verses, we see how God raised up Saul as a deliverer and used him to rescue Jabesh-gilead from Nahash’s oppression. This reminds us of God’s faithfulness in providing deliverance and protection in unexpected ways.

In summary, 1 Samuel 11:1 captures a critical moment in Israel’s history and teaches us valuable lessons about trusting in God’s deliverance, avoiding compromise, recognizing the need for godly leadership, and relying on God’s faithfulness in challenging times.
