Listen to this article

“And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel is situated in the Old Testament and focuses on the transition from the period of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. Samuel, one of the key figures in this transition, plays a crucial role in guiding the people of Israel during this time.

The LORD sent deliverers:In this verse, Samuel is speaking to the Israelites, reminding them of how God delivered them from their enemies on various occasions.

The names mentioned-Jerubbaal (Gideon), Bedan (an uncertain figure, possibly a reference to Barak or another judge), Jephthah, and Samuel himself-represent the judges or deliverers whom God raised up to rescue Israel from oppression.

God’s deliverance:Throughout the period of the judges, Israel faced numerous threats from neighboring nations and tribes. Whenever the Israelites turned away from God and followed idols, they would fall into the hands of their enemies. However, when they cried out to God and repented, He would raise up judges to save them. The verse emphasizes that it was the LORD who sent these deliverers to rescue His people from their enemies.

Dwelled safe:The verse concludes by highlighting the result of God’s deliverance‑safety and security for the Israelites. When they turned back to the Lord and relied on His deliverance, they could live in peace, free from the oppression and attacks of their enemies. This serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God, as He is the ultimate source of protection and security.

Overall, 1 Samuel 12:11 highlights God’s faithfulness in delivering His people from their enemies and providing them with safety. It underscores the significance of relying on God and turning to Him in times of trouble, acknowledging that He alone has the power to rescue and protect His people. It’s important to read the surrounding verses and chapters to gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and the lessons conveyed through Samuel’s words.
