Listen to this article

“And Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.”

Context:First Samuel 12 captures an important moment in the history of Israel. Samuel, the last judge of Israel and a prophet, had anointed Saul as the first king of Israel. However, Samuel was now stepping down from his position as judge, acknowledging that the people desired a king like other nations. In this chapter, Samuel addresses the people, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and warning them about the consequences of disobedience.

Samuel’s Call to God:In verse 18, we see Samuel’s response to the people’s request for a king. Instead of being resentful or angry, Samuel turns to the Lord. He seeks God’s intervention and guidance by calling upon Him. This demonstrates Samuel’s reliance on God and his commitment to fulfilling his role as a prophet.

God’s Response:In response to Samuel’s call, the Lord sends thunder and rain that day. This supernatural display of thunder and rain serves as a sign or confirmation of God’s presence and power. It is a visible manifestation of God’s response to Samuel’s prayer, indicating His approval and support.

The People’s Reaction:The people, witnessing the thunder and rain sent by the Lord, greatly fear both the Lord and Samuel. This reaction is a mixture of awe, reverence, and fear. The display of God’s power and Samuel’s association with it inspires a healthy respect and fear of the Lord in the hearts of the people.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Samuel’s Example:Samuel’s immediate response to the people’s request is an example of seeking God’s guidance in difficult situations. Rather than relying on his own judgment or becoming resentful, he turns to the Lord in prayer. We can learn from Samuel’s example and seek God’s wisdom and direction when faced with challenges or decisions.
  • God’s Presence and Power:The thunder and rain sent by the Lord serve as a reminder of God’s presence and authority. It highlights His ability to control nature and reveals His divine power. Recognizing God’s sovereignty should lead us to reverence and fear Him, acknowledging His authority in our lives.
  • The Impact of Godly Leaders:Samuel’s association with the supernatural display influences the people’s response. A godly leader who seeks and follows God’s guidance can have a significant impact on those they lead. This emphasizes the importance of having leaders who are faithful to God and His Word.
  • Reverence for God:The people’s fear of the Lord and Samuel should inspire us to cultivate a healthy reverence for God. While we are called to approach God with boldness and confidence, we must also recognize His holiness and power. Balancing a deep reverence for God with an intimate relationship is vital in our walk with Him.

In summary, 1 Samuel 12:18 portrays Samuel’s call to the Lord, God’s response with thunder and rain, and the people’s resulting fear of the Lord and Samuel. This passage teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance, recognizing His presence and power, valuing godly leaders, and cultivating a healthy reverence for God in our lives.
