1 Samuel 13:11

Listen to this article

“And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash.”

Context:The book of 1 Samuel is a historical account of the establishment of the monarchy in Israel. It begins with the birth of Samuel, who would become a prophet and the last judge of Israel. The people of Israel demanded a king, and Saul was chosen by God to be the first king of Israel.

In this particular verse, we find Saul, the newly anointed king, facing a difficult situation. Samuel, the prophet and judge, had instructed Saul to wait for him at Gilgal for seven days, after which Samuel would come and offer sacrifices to God. However, Samuel had not arrived within the appointed time, and the people of Israel started scattering. Moreover, the Philistines had gathered together in Michmash, posing a threat to Israel.

Saul, feeling the pressure of the situation and the potential loss of support from his people, made a decision based on his own understanding. Instead of waiting for Samuel, who was appointed by God as the spiritual authority, Saul took it upon himself to offer the burnt offering to God.

Lessons from the Verse:

  • Obedience and Patience:The verse highlights the importance of obedience and patience in our relationship with God. Saul’s impatience and lack of trust in God’s timing led him to make a decision that went against God’s instructions. It serves as a reminder for us to be patient and obedient, even when the circumstances seem difficult or uncertain. It is important to trust in God’s perfect timing and guidance.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:Saul’s actions reveal a tendency to rely on his own understanding and judgment rather than seeking God’s guidance. He should have waited for Samuel, the appointed spiritual leader, to offer the sacrifices. Similarly, in our lives, it is crucial to seek God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel from spiritual leaders. Trusting in our own wisdom can lead us astray, but relying on God’s guidance ensures that we walk in His will.
  • Consequences of Disobedience:Saul’s disobedience had severe consequences for him and his kingdom. As we continue reading the account in 1 Samuel, we see that Saul’s disobedience ultimately led to his downfall and the loss of God’s favor. It serves as a reminder that there are consequences for our disobedience to God’s commands. It is important to remember that obedience to God’s Word is essential for experiencing His blessings and walking in His purposes.

In summary, 1 Samuel 13:11 teaches us about the significance of obedience, patience, seeking God’s guidance, and the consequences of disobedience. It serves as a reminder to trust in God’s timing, rely on His guidance, and walk in obedience to His commands.
