1 Samuel 14:11

Posted on 9 September 2025
Listen to this article

“And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.”

Context:The passage takes place during the time of the prophet Samuel, when Saul was the first king of Israel. The Israelites were constantly at odds with the Philistines, and in this particular incident, Jonathan, Saul’s son, initiated a daring act of faith.

Courageous Faith:In the preceding verses, Jonathan and his armour-bearer decided to go up against the Philistine garrison. In verse 6, Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, “Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.” This statement reflects Jonathan’s faith in God’s power and willingness to deliver His people. It takes great courage to challenge a heavily armed enemy, but Jonathan trusted in God’s intervention.

The Discovery:As Jonathan and his armour-bearer approached the Philistine garrison, they revealed themselves, indicating their presence to the Philistines. The Philistines recognised them and remarked, “Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.” The Israelites had been hiding in caves and other concealed places, fearful of the Philistines’ dominance. However, Jonathan’s action of revealing himself showed his boldness and his reliance on God’s guidance.

Faith Over Fear:This passage highlights the stark contrast between Jonathan’s faith and the fear that gripped the Israelite army. Jonathan was unwilling to passively accept the oppressive circumstances and chose to trust in the Lord’s power. The other Israelite soldiers, on the other hand, were hiding in fear. Jonathan’s action of stepping out in faith challenged the prevailing atmosphere of fear and complacency, inspiring others to follow suit.

God’s Intervention:In the subsequent verses, we see that God honoured Jonathan’s faith and bravery. He granted them a great victory over the Philistines, causing confusion among the enemy camp and leading to widespread panic. God used Jonathan’s act of faith to bring about a deliverance for His people and to display His power before both the Israelites and the Philistines.

Lessons we can learn from 1 Samuel 14:11:

  • Boldness in God:Jonathan’s example teaches us to trust in God’s power and to step out in faith even when circumstances seem unfavourable. God can use the faithful actions of one person to bring about remarkable transformations.
  • Overcoming fear:The passage challenges us to confront our fears and not allow them to paralyse us. Instead, we should rely on God’s strength and promises, knowing that He is able to overcome any obstacle we face.
  • God’s faithfulness:We see God’s faithfulness in responding to Jonathan’s faith. Just as God intervened in this situation, He is faithful to fulfil His promises and deliver His people when they place their trust in Him.

In conclusion, 1 Samuel 14:11 showcases Jonathan’s courageous act of faith, challenging the prevailing fear and initiating God’s intervention. It encourages us to trust in God’s power, overcome our fears, and believe in His faithfulness to deliver us.
