Listen to this article

“And Saul built an altar unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built unto the Lord.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the Book of 1 Samuel that recounts the early days of Saul’s reign as the first king of Israel:To better understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore the context and extract some key themes. The events leading up to this verse involve Saul and his son Jonathan engaging in a daring military campaign against the Philistines. Saul had forbidden his soldiers from eating until evening, but Jonathan, unaware of his father’s command, tasted some honeycomb, and his eyes were enlightened. As a result, the Israelite army obtained a great victory over the Philistines. Following the victory, Saul decides to build an altar to the Lord:It is important to note that this altar is referred to as the “first altar” that Saul built unto the Lord. This statement is significant because it signifies a turning point in Saul’s life and his relationship with God.

Here are a few key points we can draw from this verse:

  • Recognition of God’s Role:By building an altar to the Lord, Saul acknowledges God’s hand in the victory over the Philistines. This act demonstrates Saul’s understanding that success comes from God’s favour and intervention.
  • Repentance and Devotion:The reference to this being Saul’s “first altar” suggests that Saul had not been diligent in his worship of God before this point. It indicates a newfound devotion and a change of heart on Saul’s part. Saul’s decision to build an altar demonstrates repentance and a desire to establish a deeper connection with God.
  • Symbolism of the Altar:Altars in the Old Testament were places of worship and sacrifice. They served as a meeting point between God and humanity. Saul’s construction of an altar represents a desire to commune with God, seek forgiveness, and express gratitude.
  • Personal Transformation:This verse hints at Saul’s spiritual transformation. It reveals a shift in Saul’s priorities and an inclination towards seeking God’s guidance and favour. Saul’s act of building the altar reflects a change from self-reliance to dependence on God.

It is important to read this verse in the broader context of Saul’s life. While this moment reflects a positive turning point, Saul’s reign as king is marked by both successes and failures. Nevertheless, this verse highlights the potential for transformation and the importance of recognising God’s role in our lives. Overall, 1 Samuel 14:35 reminds us of the significance of acknowledging God, expressing gratitude, seeking forgiveness, and cultivating a deeper relationship with Him. It encourages us to turn to God in all circumstances and prioritise our devotion to Him.
