1 Samuel 14:51

Listen to this article

“And Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.”

This verse is part of the historical account of the reign of Saul:the first king of Israel. It provides a brief genealogical reference to Saul’s family lineage.

1 Samuel 14:51 begins by stating that Kish was the father of Saul. Kish was a man from the tribe of Benjamin, and he is introduced in 1 Samuel 9:1-2 as the father of Saul. Saul was chosen by God to be the first king of Israel, anointed by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1).

The verse then mentions Ner, who is identified as the father of Abner. Abner played a significant role in the early years of Saul’s reign. He served as the commander of Saul’s army and was known for his military prowess (1 Samuel 14:50). Abner later became an influential figure in the book of 2 Samuel, particularly after the death of Saul.

Finally, the verse adds that Abner was the son of Abiel. This is the only mention of Abiel in the Bible, and not much is known about him.

Overall, 1 Samuel 14:51 provides a concise genealogical reference, establishing the familial connections of Saul, the first king of Israel, and introducing Abner, who would later become an important figure in the narrative of the books of Samuel.
