1 Samuel 15:9

Posted on 13 September 2025
Listen to this article

“But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.”

Context:In this passage, Saul was given a specific command from God through the prophet Samuel to completely destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions. However, Saul and the people spared King Agag and the best livestock, only destroying what they considered undesirable.

God’s Command:The Lord’s command to Saul was clear and specific – utterly destroy everything belonging to the Amalekites. God’s judgment upon the Amalekites was a consequence of their past sins, including their attack on the Israelites during their wilderness journey (Exodus 17:8-16). God wanted to remove this wicked nation from existence.

Partial Obedience:Saul’s disobedience is evident in his failure to carry out God’s command fully. Though he destroyed some of the Amalekites, he spared their king and the best of the livestock. Saul’s motive for sparing the king and the livestock was likely a combination of personal gain and the influence of the people. By doing so, Saul deviated from God’s specific instructions.

Consequences of Disobedience:Samuel confronted Saul about his disobedience, and Saul attempted to justify his actions. However, Samuel informed Saul that God valued obedience above sacrifices and that his rebellion against God’s command would cost him the kingdom. This incident demonstrated the seriousness of obeying God fully and the consequences of partial obedience.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Obedience:God desires complete obedience from His people. Partial obedience is still disobedience. Even if we think our motives are good, we should align ourselves with God’s Word and His commands.
  • Prioritising God’s Will:Saul prioritised his own desires and the opinions of others above God’s clear instructions. We should never compromise God’s will for personal gain or the approval of others. Instead, we should seek to honour and follow God faithfully.
  • Consequences of Disobedience:Disobeying God always has consequences. Saul lost his kingdom because he failed to follow God’s instructions. We should remember that our choices have consequences, and it is essential to make choices that align with God’s Word and His will for our lives.

1 Samuel 15:9 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the consequences of failing to follow them completely. It challenges us to evaluate our own hearts and actions, seeking to align ourselves with God’s will in all areas of our lives.
