1 Samuel 15:12

Listen to this article

“And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s important to consider the context in which it occurs. 1 Samuel 15 recounts the story of Saul’s disobedience to God’s command regarding the Amalekites. God had instructed Saul to utterly destroy the Amalekites and everything that belonged to them as a punishment for their past wickedness. However, Saul and his army spared King Agag and the best of the livestock.

Disobedience of Saul:In 1 Samuel 15:12, we see the consequences of Saul’s disobedience. The verse states, “And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.”

Samuel’s Response:Samuel, the prophet of God, had been instructed by God to confront Saul for his disobedience. Samuel rose early to meet Saul, but he received news that Saul had set up a monument for himself at Carmel and had moved on to Gilgal. This act of setting up a monument can be seen as an expression of Saul’s self-importance and a failure to recognise the severity of his disobedience.

Lessons to Learn:

  • a) Obedience to God:Saul’s disobedience serves as a warning about the importance of obedience to God’s commands. God had given specific instructions to Saul, but he chose to do things his own way, sparing the king and the best of the livestock. We are reminded that God values obedience above personal preferences or self-interest. It is crucial for us to heed God’s instructions and follow His will in our lives.
  • b) Pride and Self-Centeredness:Saul’s act of setting up a monument for himself reflects his pride and self-centeredness. Instead of acknowledging his error and seeking forgiveness, Saul sought to glorify himself. This teaches us the dangers of pride and the importance of humility before God. We should always give glory to God and recognise our need for His mercy and forgiveness.
  • c) Consequences of Disobedience:Saul’s disobedience resulted in severe consequences. Later in the chapter, Samuel confronts Saul, and God rejects him as king. Saul’s failure to follow God’s command led to the loss of his kingship and the favour of God. This reminds us that there are consequences for our actions, and disobedience can have serious spiritual implications.

Application:

  • Prioritise Obedience:When faced with decisions and choices in our lives, we must prioritise obedience to God’s Word. It is not enough to have good intentions or even to achieve outward success if we are disobedient to God’s commands. We should seek His guidance through prayer and study of Scripture, and strive to align our actions with His will.
  • Guard against Pride:Pride can hinder our relationship with God and lead us astray. It is essential to cultivate humility and recognise that our accomplishments and successes are ultimately gifts from God. We should always give credit to God for His blessings in our lives and remain humble before Him.
  • Repentance and Forgiveness:When we do fall into disobedience, it is crucial to acknowledge our wrongdoing, repent, and seek God’s forgiveness. Saul’s story shows us the importance of genuine repentance and turning back to God. He is merciful and ready to forgive those who humbly come before Him with a contrite heart.

Remember, studying the Bible is a process of exploring its depth and seeking to apply its teachings in our lives. Through prayer, reflection, and further study, we can gain further insights and personal applications from this verse and the surrounding context.
