1 Samuel 15:21

Listen to this article

“But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.”

This verse is a part of the account of King Saul’s disobedience to God’s command regarding the Amalekites. To better understand the context, let’s explore the surrounding verses and the broader story.

In 1 Samuel 15, God commanded Saul:through the prophet Samuel, to completely destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions as a punishment for their past wickedness against the Israelites. God specifically instructed Saul to utterly destroy everything, sparing nothing.

However, when Saul led the Israelite army into battle against the Amalekites, they defeated them but did not fully carry out God’s command. They spared Agag, the king of the Amalekites, and also took the best of the livestock as plunder, contrary to God’s instructions.

In verse 21, Saul’s response:to Samuel’s rebuke is an attempt to justify his disobedience. Saul claims that the people took the spoil to sacrifice it to the Lord their God in Gilgal. He portrays their actions as an act of devotion and worship to God.

However, Samuel responds:in verses 22-23, highlighting the importance of obedience over sacrifices. Samuel states that God values obedience more than burnt offerings and sacrifices. God desires sincere obedience and submission to His will rather than religious rituals performed without obedience.

This incident serves as a reminder of the significance of obedience in our relationship with God. It demonstrates that God expects His people to follow His commands completely and not to compromise or make exceptions based on their own desires or interpretations. Partial obedience is ultimately disobedience in God’s eyes.

The lessons we can learn from this passage are:

  • Complete obedience:God expects us to obey His commands fully, without compromise or selective adherence. We should not pick and choose which parts of His instructions to follow but rather seek to align our lives with His will in every aspect.
  • Obedience over religious rituals:While religious practices and sacrifices are important, they should never be used as a substitute for genuine obedience. Our worship and devotion to God should flow from a heart that is committed to obeying His word.
  • God values obedience:God places greater importance on obedience than external acts of worship. He desires a sincere and obedient heart rather than religious rituals performed without a genuine commitment to His will.

In summary, 1 Samuel 15:21 teaches us about the importance of complete obedience to God’s commands and the priority of obedience over religious rituals. It reminds us to strive for wholehearted devotion to God and to seek His will in all areas of our lives.
