1 Samuel 16:16

Listen to this article

"Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well."

1 Samuel 16:16 is part of the narrative where King Saul of Israel was troubled by an evil spirit from God. Let’s explore the context and significance of this verse.

Context:Prior to this verse, Samuel the prophet was instructed by God to anoint a new king from among the sons of Jesse, as Saul had disobeyed God’s commands. Samuel visited Jesse’s household and saw his eldest son, Eliab, assuming he was the chosen one. However, God revealed to Samuel that He looks at the heart and not the outward appearance, and that He had chosen David, the youngest son of Jesse, to be anointed as the next king.

In 1 Samuel 16:16, we find an interesting situation where Saul’s servants propose a solution to alleviate Saul’s distress caused by the evil spirit. They suggest that a skilled musician be sought out to play the harp whenever the evil spirit torments Saul. It is important to note that the evil spirit is referred to as being "from God," indicating that God permitted it for a specific purpose.

Lessons from 1 Samuel 16:16:

  • The power of music:Music has the ability to soothe and bring comfort to troubled hearts. In this context, the playing of the harp by a skilled musician, in this case, David, was believed to have a calming effect on Saul and alleviate the torment caused by the evil spirit. This highlights the therapeutic nature of music and its ability to influence our emotions positively.
  • God’s providence and purpose:Even though Saul was plagued by an evil spirit, it is crucial to recognise that God was in control. The presence of the evil spirit served a purpose in God’s plan to remove Saul from the throne and establish David as the next king. It reminds us that God’s sovereignty extends even over challenging situations and that He can work through difficult circumstances for His purposes.
  • David’s selection as king:Although not explicitly mentioned in this verse, it is important to understand its connection to the broader narrative. David’s skill as a harpist allowed him to enter Saul’s service and eventually gain favour with him. This paved the way for David’s rise to prominence, leading to his anointing as king. This verse sets the stage for David’s introduction to Saul’s court and his journey towards fulfilling God’s purpose for his life.

Overall, 1 Samuel 16:16 highlights the power of music, God’s providential control even in difficult circumstances, and the unfolding of His plan to establish David as the chosen king.
