1 Samuel 16:20
And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
1 Samuel 16:20 (KJV)
Context
In the preceding chapter, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the future king of Israel. Jesse presented his eldest son, Eliab, assuming he would be chosen based on outward appearance, but God reminded Samuel that He looks at the heart rather than external appearances (1 Samuel 16:7). Samuel then asked if Jesse had any other sons, and David, the youngest, was brought in from tending the sheep. After David was anointed, Saul sent messengers to Jesse requesting David to enter his service (1 Samuel 16:19). This verse records Jesse’s response: he loaded a donkey with bread, a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David to Saul.
Meaning
Jesse’s gifts were a customary tribute and practical provision for the king, reflecting the hospitality and honor expected when approaching a ruler. The bread and wine symbolized sustenance and celebration, while the kid added a valuable provision. This act demonstrated Jesse’s respect for Saul, who was still the reigning king, and his obedience to the royal summons. It also provided for David’s journey and introduction to Saul’s court.
Biblical connections
This verse marks the beginning of David’s transition from shepherd to servant in Saul’s court. Saul was afflicted by an evil spirit from the Lord, and David’s skillful harp playing was believed to soothe him (1 Samuel 16:14-23). David’s delivery of the gifts was not merely an errand; it brought him into the king’s service, setting the stage for his rise in prominence and his eventual anointed role as king.
Application
This passage teaches that God looks at the heart, not external appearances. David’s selection was based on his trust in God and willingness to obey. Jesse’s act encourages believers to show respect and honor to those in authority, even when God’s larger plan is at work. David’s willingness to serve and use his musical talent for Saul’s benefit reminds us to use our gifts to serve others, trusting that God’s providential plan unfolds through humble obedience.
Reflection
David’s journey from shepherd to servant began with a simple act of obedience and provision. God often works through ordinary circumstances and humble tasks to accomplish His purposes. As we serve faithfully in our current roles, we can trust that God is preparing us for what He has planned, just as He prepared David for the throne.
