1 Samuel 16:22

Listen to this article

"And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight."

Context:First, let’s understand the context of the verse. In 1 Samuel 16, Samuel, the prophet, is sent by God to anoint a new king over Israel, as Saul had proven disobedient. God leads Samuel to the house of Jesse, and Jesse’s sons are brought before Samuel. After seeing Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab, Samuel assumes he is the chosen one, but God corrects him, stating that He looks at the heart rather than outward appearance. Samuel then asks Jesse to bring his other sons, and finally, the youngest son, David, is brought before Samuel. This leads us to 1 Samuel 16:22.

Saul’s Request:After David is anointed by Samuel as the future king of Israel, he returns to his father Jesse’s house. In the verse, Saul sends a request to Jesse, asking that David be brought before him.

David’s Favour:Saul acknowledges that David has found favour in his sight. This refers to the fact that David had become popular due to his courage, musical skill, and the defeat of Goliath (1 Samuel 17). Saul is impressed by David and desires his presence.

Key Themes and Lessons:– God’s Chosen: The verse highlights that David has found favour not only in the eyes of Saul but ultimately in the eyes of God. It reinforces the idea that God’s selection and favour are not based on external appearances but on the heart. This aligns with the earlier lesson from Samuel’s visit to Jesse’s house when God declared that He looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).

Divine Preparation:David’s favour in the eyes of Saul is a part of God’s plan to prepare him for his future role as the king of Israel. It shows how God orchestrates events and opens doors for His chosen ones, positioning them in the right places at the right times.

God’s Sovereignty:The verse highlights God’s sovereignty in the affairs of human beings. Despite Saul’s troubled reign and eventual downfall, God works through these circumstances to bring about His purposes. Saul’s request to have David near him is a consequence of God’s providential plan.

Application:

  • Pursue a Heart for God:Like David, we should strive to have a heart after God. Our external appearances or achievements may not impress others, but what truly matters is our relationship with God and our commitment to following His will. Cultivating a heart that seeks God’s favour should be our primary focus.
  • Trust God’s Timing:David’s anointing as king did not result in immediate enthronement. He had to wait for God’s timing and navigate through challenging circumstances before assuming the throne. Similarly, we must trust God’s timing in our lives and patiently persevere, even when it seems like our calling or desired outcomes are delayed.
  • Embrace Opportunities:When doors of opportunity open, we should be prepared to step into them, trusting that God has orchestrated those moments for His purpose. David seized the opportunity to serve Saul, which furthered his growth and journey towards becoming the king.

Remember to read the entire chapter of 1 Samuel 16 to gain a deeper understanding of the story and its significance.
