1 Samuel 17:9

Posted on 13 September 2025
Listen to this article

“If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.”

Context:The passage is from the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, which tells the story of the rise of King David and the decline of Saul as king of Israel. In chapter 17, the Philistines and Israelites are engaged in battle, and Goliath, a giant and champion of the Philistines, challenges the Israelites to send out a champion to fight him.

Goliath’s Challenge:Goliath presents a challenge to the Israelites, offering a proposal of individual combat. If the Israelite champion can defeat and kill Goliath, the Philistines would become servants to the Israelites. On the other hand, if Goliath wins, the Israelites would serve the Philistines.

Intimidation and Fear:Goliath’s stature and reputation create fear among the Israelites. They perceive the challenge as insurmountable and are paralysed by fear, which prevents them from responding to Goliath’s challenge.

Trust in Human Strength:Goliath’s challenge exposes the Israelites’ reliance on their own strength rather than trusting in God. They see Goliath as an unbeatable opponent, neglect

Application:Trust in God’s Power:Like the Israelites, we may face challenges in life that seem overwhelming. However, this verse reminds us to place our trust in God’s power rather than relying solely on our own abilities. God is greater than any problem we encounter, and He can provide the strength and wisdom we need to face any situation. Overcoming Fear:Fear can hinder us from taking necessary action. Just as the Israelites were immobilised by fear, we can find ourselves paralysed by the challenges we face. By trusting in God and His promises, we can find the courage to step forward and confront our fears, knowing that God is with us. God’s Faithfulness:Reflecting on past victories and God’s faithfulness in our lives can help build our confidence and trust in Him. Just as God had delivered the Israelites in the past, He remains the same today. Remembering His faithfulness can encourage us to face our giants with boldness and assurance.

Summary:1 Samuel 17:9 reminds us to trust in God’s power, overcome fear through faith, and remember God’s faithfulness. It teaches us that no matter how daunting our challenges may appear, God is always greater and able to provide what we need. Just as David later defeated Goliath by relying on God’s strength, we too can conquer our “giants” when we place our trust in God and step forward in faith.
